Science
Intent:
At Edmondsley Primary Academy, we want all pupils to enjoy exploring science and develop broad scientific knowledge and skills as a basis for future learning. Our Science Curriculum provides a coherent framework, with pupils developing their learning in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with an understanding of possible future careers. Science begins with pupils’ learning rooted in their own lived experiences and develops into a deeper understanding of more complex concepts.
We encourage and foster:
- An excitement for and love of Science.
- Using our school outdoor environment to facilitate relevant and contextualised Science learning.
- Learning about ourselves and our environment to help our pupils understand how to live healthy lifestyles and be environmentally aware.
- The ability to observe closely, investigate, research and then apply this knowledge and draw conclusions.
- Critical thinking, asking questions and exploring how answers might be discovered.
- First-hand and practical experience of all science concepts covered in each unit of work, wherever possible.
- Growing independence in following the scientific method and conducting scientific investigations.
- Secure skills in working scientifically, alongside embedded subject knowledge.

Working Mathematically in Science
Science Programmes of Study: Key Stages 1 & 2
Implementation:
Our Science sessions are designed to be progressive and build upon prior learning, by following the Early Years Foundation Stage and 2014 National Curriculum to ensure that all pupils:
● have opportunities to make sense of their physical world
● develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
● develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
● are designed to encourage children to explore and investigate themselves, recording their planning, results and findings with increasing detail and scientific understanding
● are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this

Impact:
The high-quality curriculum, results in engaging, high-quality science education that provides children with the foundations and knowledge for understanding the world. Our engagement with the local environment ensures that children learn through varied and first-hand experiences of the world around them. The consistent structure of plan, experiment, record, evaluate throughout both key stages, means that students can build on prior knowledge, deepen their understanding into scientific enquiry and leave Key Stage Two with the skills to prepare them for further learning and future careers.
