PSHE & RSE

Intent

At Edmondsley Primary School, we want all pupils to become lifelong learners who are confident, resilient, and able to navigate new experiences and challenges. Our PSHCE Curriculum provides a coherent framework, supporting pupils to develop knowledge, understanding, and skills in health, well-being, relationships, and diversity. Learning begins with pupils’ own experiences and understanding of the world, developing into a deeper awareness of themselves, others, and their wider community.

We encourage and foster:

  • An understanding of mental and physical health and the importance of resilience.
  • Exploration of safe, happy, and positive relationships with peers, family, and the wider community.
  • Appreciation of diversity, difference, and the value of contribution to local and global communities.
  • Opportunities to ask questions, reflect on beliefs, and make thoughtful decisions.
  • Age-appropriate understanding of physical and emotional changes, alongside ethical, moral, and emotional aspects of relationships.
  • Skills to navigate social and emotional challenges, make informed choices, and develop a moral framework for adult life.
  • Active engagement with PSHCE through discussion, enquiry, practical experiences, and community involvement.

Implementation

Our PSHCE sessions are designed to be progressive and build upon prior learning, following guidance from the PSHE Association to ensure that all pupils:

  • have opportunities to understand themselves, their emotions, and their role within their community
  • develop knowledge and skills in health, well-being, relationships, and diversity, including age-appropriate Health, Sex, and Relationship Education (HSRE)
  • explore diverse beliefs, values, and attitudes, developing the ability to communicate feelings and make informed decisions
  • are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, and make connections between PSHCE learning and other areas of the curriculum
  • are supported to develop resilience, positive relationships, and a moral framework to guide decisions and behaviour
  • have opportunities to apply learning in real-life contexts, including contributing to school life through roles such as School Councillor, Sports Organising Crew, or Travel Ambassador

We ensure lessons are skills-based, with knowledge integrated through discussion, practical activities, whole-school assemblies, and focused days, so that children can embed and apply their learning throughout the school day.

Impact

Our PSHCE curriculum helps children develop confidence, resilience, and the skills to care for their mental and physical health. Through lessons, assemblies, and focused activities, pupils learn about relationships, diversity, and their role in the community.

Children have opportunities to take on responsibilities, such as School Councillor or Sports Leader, applying their learning in real-life contexts and developing citizenship skills.

Regular assessment and support ensure all pupils achieve or exceed national expectations. Our Health, Sex, and Relationship Education equips children with the knowledge to form safe, positive relationships and make informed choices, helping them grow into caring, respectful, responsible, and confident individuals.
