PE
Intent
At Edmondsley Primary School, we want every child to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, movement and sport. We believe PE is not just about developing physical skill, but also about nurturing happy, healthy, confident and resilient learners who understand the importance of an active lifestyle for both body and mind.
Through our PE curriculum, we aim to:
- Provide opportunities for all children to enjoy movement and physical activity while developing fundamental skills such as balance, coordination, agility and strength.
- Offer a broad and diverse range of physical experiences — from dance to team games to outdoor adventure — so every child can discover activities they enjoy and excel in.
- Inspire children to be inclusive, respectful and collaborative, developing qualities such as teamwork, fair play, perseverance and sportsmanship.
- Enable children to develop competence and confidence across a wide variety of physical activities so they leave primary school well-prepared to participate positively in sport and physical activity at secondary school and beyond.
Implementation
Early Years: Physical development is a core part of the EYFS curriculum. Children explore fundamental movement skills through structured and child-led activities, both indoors and outdoors. Fine and gross motor skills are nurtured through climbing, balancing, dance, ball skills and opportunities to move creatively in our OPAL play environment.
Key Stage 1: Children are introduced to dance, gymnastics and games with a focus on developing balance, movement, coordination, tactics and teamwork. They also access athletics and outdoor adventurous activities, alongside wellbeing-focused sessions such as yoga and Relax Kids.
Key Stage 2: PE builds progressively on KS1 foundations. Children develop competence in a growing range of sports, including invasion games (football, handball, netball, tag rugby), striking/fielding (rounders, cricket), gymnastics, dance, athletics and net/wall games. Outdoor and adventurous activities support resilience, problem-solving and communication. Swimming forms part of the curriculum, with all pupils supported to swim 25 metres by the end of Year 6.
Across the school, high-quality teaching is supported by specialist coaches, structured progression maps and enrichment opportunities such as festivals, competitions, OPAL play and extra-curricular clubs.
Impact
The impact of PE at Edmondsley is measured not only in children’s skill development but also in their enjoyment, participation, attitudes and understanding of active, healthy living.
- Assessment: Teachers assess progress at the end of each unit against clear skill and knowledge objectives. A range of assessment strategies are used, including observation, peer/self-assessment, performances, competitions and challenges.
- Inclusion and participation: Monitoring ensures that all pupils — including less confident children — are engaged and making progress. Extra-curricular participation is tracked to promote equitable access.
- Pupil voice: Children regularly share their experiences of PE through pupil voice activities. Their feedback helps shape future planning and ensures enjoyment is central to the subject.
- Health and wellbeing: Children demonstrate increasing understanding of fitness, healthy lifestyles and the benefits of physical activity for mental and physical wellbeing.
- Leadership: Older pupils develop responsibility and leadership skills through warm-ups, organising activities, supporting others and acting as Sports Leaders.
Our PE curriculum equips children with the confidence, skills and positive attitudes needed to lead active, healthy lives long into the future.
