MFL
Intent
At Edmondsley Primary Academy, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to other cultures and broadens children’s understanding of the world. Our aim is for pupils to develop a genuine enthusiasm for language learning and the confidence to communicate in another language, both orally and in writing.
Through French lessons, we aim to:
- Foster curiosity and broaden cultural horizons by exploring similarities and differences between languages and cultures.
- Enable children to express themselves with increasing accuracy, independence and fluency.
- Build strong foundations in phonics, vocabulary and grammar so that knowledge is retained and built upon across KS2.
- Inspire enjoyment, engagement and confidence so that pupils leave primary school ready for continued language learning at secondary level.
Implementation
We use Language Angels to support the planning and delivery of MFL. This provides a clear, well-sequenced curriculum ensuring progression across KS2, regardless of children’s varied journeys through mixed-age classes.
Teaching and learning:
- All French lessons combine listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- Children develop confidence through games, songs, role-play, modelled conversations and interactive tasks, alongside more structured written activities.
- Pronunciation and phonics teaching are embedded throughout each unit to support accuracy and fluency.
Skills progression:
- Units are carefully sequenced to revisit and build on prior learning.
- Retrieval tasks at the start of lessons help children “know more and remember more” over time.
Cultural awareness:
- Pupils learn not only the French language but also gain an understanding of French culture, traditions, festivals and daily life.
- Opportunities to compare life in France with their own experiences deepen cultural appreciation.
Impact
Children’s progress in French is assessed at the end of each unit through a mixture of oral and written tasks. These may include short presentations, dialogues, quizzes, role-play or written outcomes. Assessment ensures children are supported to make strong progress and develop increasing confidence.
By the end of KS2, pupils will:
- Be able to hold simple conversations in French using accurate pronunciation.
- Read and write short texts with increasing accuracy and understanding.
- Demonstrate secure knowledge of key vocabulary, grammar structures and phonics.
- Show enthusiasm for languages and an openness to other cultures.
